I saw that a headlight thread was taking off on a different direction, so I thought I'd start up a "water cooler" type thread over here on tools outside of HLR or WSR use.

I just recently decided to start back into some minor woodworking as a hobby. I used to spend time with my grandfather working on projects with him when he was still alive but hadn't done much recently, so I figured now was a good time to go back into it and watch less T.V.

My lovely girlfriend bought me a set of 18v Makita LXT driver/drill and impact driver. Man do they have some torque. I learned quickly that making pilot holes too small was a bad idea. On my workbench project alone, i had about 5 or 6 decking screws and 2 heavier duty wood screws not strip, but snap about halfway down the length of the screw. So, i couldn't remove the screw and had to adjust the location of the replacement screw. Good thing I was countersinking them, but the stained wood putty still irks me a bit, as I can see 3 spots instead of 2 in a few places.

On the bright side, these newer compact lithium ion tools have been amazing as far as battery life goes. I must have driven 200 screws plus drilled 200 pilot holes with 2 batteries before I even had to charge them for the first time. I think I've had them for about 4 months, and have only needed to recharge the batteries 2 times or so with reasonable use for a non commercial purpose....

So, I'm still learning how to best judge the size of pilot hole I need to avoid snapping screws in half, but I love the tools. It also came with a bonus recipro saw, but I don't often have a use for that with what I'm doing. Would have preferred a circular saw, but I got a corded one, since i wanted to use larger diameter blades.

Anyway, hope everyone has a great weekend!

Cheers,

Adam

Why did you stain your work bench? Now when you get some glue or paint on it that will IRK you even more.

My benches are mad of doubled 2X4's and the top is doubled 3/4 ply. 30x60 and the other is 30X72. I will have my miter saw mounted between both so I can cut 8 - 12" trim.

Tools
I bought a Hitachi 12" miter saw on craigslist for 150 an delta 12" band saw for 175, a HD 80 gal 240v air comp for 250.

I watch craigslist daily to see what I can get. We live right next to an Army base, and as the GI's have to leave they are over weight for shipping they have to sell off. Most all the tools I bought are less than 2 yrs old.

Shop
I have a 25 x 40 steel shop and I am dividing it so I can do wood working in half and welding in the other side without wondering if a spark is going to torch the wood side.
The wood side will be lined with 3/8 OSB on the walls then make shelves, and the welding side will be metal siding like the outside.

When I can afford it I will blow out the side another 10 feet to add on to the welding side so I can get my steel inside on the rack.

Along with adding 240 wiring as I go. Fun. No time to get in to trouble.

the shop is called the "dog house". All I hear is my wife telling me to go to the dog house when I start to piss her off.
Have frig and beer, no problem:rolleyes:

I was checking craigslist and found a DeWalt DC920KA 1/2" drill, 2 Batteries, Hand grip and charger. $100.00. Bought it this morning.
The batteries cost that alone...

Now I will be looking for a reconditioned Circular Saw, hammer drill, and reciprocating saw, I don't need the batteries do the the fact I now have eight on hand...
I am not in a rush, I may find others going from 18V to the bigger units also...
I have all the time in the world.

Buy some better quality screws, just joking. When I am crafting something out of wood and the phone rings or someone calls then the wife always tells them I am making sawdust, mind you sometimes she is not that far off.

you heard the saying "measure twice, cut once". Sometimes I mix it up as "Cut twice, Measure once"

Brain farts... I am left handed and I am always reading a tape upside down and it makes me think. Most all the tools are back assward or is it ass backwards? Oh well, I am use to it.
