Hello,

I'm a newbie here and have read through most of these forum posts, but I don't see any tutorial type instructions posted.

Let me clarify my situation and needs:

I'm driving a relatively new car (6 mos. old) and due to much highway driving, I now have several rock chips from passing cars/trucks. These are not the severe star, or bullseye type - just superficial surface chips that only penetrate into the outermost layer of glass - but they are mostly in my line of sight! I've tried filling them with various adhesives (and even super glue) and then leveling them off with a razor blade to the surrounding glass surface. Needless to say, nothing has worked well. I have noticed that when I have applied the clear adhesive, the chips disappears when still wet. After drying and leveling with the razor blade, I end up destroying the "clearness" of the repair.

I understand the "resin" system may be similar to my primitive methods, but could anyone post a how-to on this forum? I'm not a professional, but am willing to work hard on my own chips - I just need the knowledge to do so.

Also, I'm willing to purchase any of these kits as long as it will work. To me - the satisfaction comes from driving with a clear windshield!

Thank you all very much,

Convolution

Great post. You need an professional system. Many of the manufacturers out their produce systems that generate vacuum and pressure. Any of these kit will do better then your over the counter products. Before you know it the system will have paid for itself and many of the replacement you would have had.

It sounds as though you are describing pits that do not need a "system" to be repaired. Unless the damage goes all the way through the layer of glass... all the wat to the laminate.. you don't have a "repairable" problem. If I was in your position I wouldn't believe me :) ... so, what you need is a pit filler (PF) and Pit Polish from any company... I use PolyLite ($25) but I am sure that Glass Tech or any other company will work as well. Put a tiny drop into the pit and immedietely cover it with a little piece of Sarahn Wrap 1"X1". The bright sun will cure the resin is less than 5 minutes.

Now, pull up the Sarahn Wrap and use a razor blade to scrape the resin down until it is even with the windshield. You want to hold the razor at a 85 degree angle... remember, you do not want to slice - you want to scrape. Go back and forth about 100 times or until you can run your fingers over the area without feeling the bump. Now put some pit polish on and polish it for about 30 strokes. You have done it!!! Wow!!! Doesn't look much better does it? Sorry.

If the damage DOES go all the way through to the laminate and you want to invest a couple hundred dollars...The best bridge on the market is made by PolyLite, ask for the blue alluminum. Use their plastic $15 injector. PolyLite has an online video on their site showing how to do repairs.

....BUT... unless you are planning to do at least 50 repairs each month, your skill level will not be too great and some of your repairs will fail. Kinda like me with a $600 driver... I still can't keep the ball on the fairway! :) Perhaps I should have used a Kmart $5 club...?

The windshield repair process takes 5 repairs to learn... but ... 1000 repairs to master... and ongoing "practice." My bottom line advice to you is to have a pro do the work or buy the $9- Kmart kit...

Good luck, keep us posted on how it works out!
